1928 Rolls Royce Phantom I with coachwork by Knibbs installed in circa 1935

The 1928 Rolls Royce Phantom 1 was originally manufactured in Derby England and served as the display for the 1928 auto show in Cairo, Egypt.

It came to us in need of a complete engine restoration after sitting for 30+ years as a result of what we suspect a blown head gasket.  Water sat in the cylinders and crankcase causing significant corrosion. The pistons had fussed themselves to the cylinder walls and corrosion had set in on most of the bearing surfaces and valvetrain.

The engine was completely disassembled.  Each part was carefully cleaned and reconditioned as required.  All Babbitt bearings were poured, and all the bushings were replaced.  New pistons were custom made. The cylinder blocks and head were corroded beyond repair and were replaced with new.

The fuel system has also been refreshed.  The gas tank has been removed cleaned, repaired and sealed.  The Autovac has been rebuilt as well and fuel lines will be rerouted to minimize vapor lock due to its close proximity to the exhaust manifolds and piping.

The pivot blocks for the radiator louvers needed to be replaced. We could not locate anyone who was manufacturing them, so we created a 3D model using the originals as a guide and had them machined on a CMC mill.  We now have the ability to recreate these when needed and provide them to other shops.

Update:  A lot of work has been completed since the last post.  The car has been completely rewired with cotton braded wire and Ross Courtney terminal ends. We added turn signals that work in conjunction with the trafficators as well.  The engine has been reassembled and is now sitting back in the chassis.  The wire wheels have been restored and balanced with new tires installed.

Update #2:  The project is now complete.  We showed the car at the Rolls Royce Annual Meet in Lake George, NY (June,2021) which included several tours around the area.  The car is now back with its owner.
